About Erin
Erin McHugh built her path to the law in the Northeast. She graduated from Lafayette College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Law and a second concentration in Spanish. She went on to earn her J.D. from Suffolk University Law School in 2018, completing a three-year course of study that prepared her for practice in state courts.
After law school, McHugh joined Sweeney Merrigan Law as an associate in 2018. She took on the day-to-day responsibilities typical of a young associate, learning case management, legal research and courtroom procedure on active matters. She is admitted to practice in both Massachusetts and Connecticut, and she has kept an active role in professional circles since entering practice.
Her professional affiliations include membership in the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers. That association points to an interest in litigation and trial work. She attends seminars and events through the academy and engages with peers on issues that affect civil trial practice in the state.
Colleagues describe McHugh as methodical and precise in preparing files for motion practice and trial. She has handled discovery tasks, drafted pleadings and assisted at depositions and hearings. Those responsibilities have given her practical, front-line experience with courtroom workflow and client preparation.
At Sweeney Merrigan Law she continues to develop her skills in litigation. The firm provided her first post-graduate position and remains her base of operations. Her role there has expanded from junior tasks to greater involvement in shaping case strategy, particularly in pretrial work and evidentiary preparation.
Outside work, McHugh’s academic background in Spanish informs client communication in multilingual matters when needed. Her undergraduate concentration in government and law complements her litigation practice by giving her perspective on legal institutions and public processes. She maintains professional ties through state bar activities and litigation-focused organizations.
She remains at Sweeney Merrigan Law, where her practice centers on litigation and trial preparation in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Her current practice focuses on civil litigation and courtroom-ready case development.
