About Erik R.

Erik R. Zimmerman graduated from Harvard University in 2004 and earned his J.D. from Stanford University in 2007, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. The academic record points to strong performance in law school. After Stanford, he moved into roles that put him close to appellate work and complex litigation matters.

Early in his legal career, Zimmerman served as a law clerk to The Honorable John G. Roberts Jr., Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, in 2009. That clerkship placed him at the center of the Court’s opinion-writing and decision-making process. The experience exposed him to high-level legal reasoning and the mechanics of resolving disputes at the nation’s highest court.

Following his clerkship, Zimmerman joined Robinson Bradshaw. At the firm he worked on cases that required careful legal research and strategic litigation planning. He has been involved in matters that span trial and appellate courts. Colleagues note his capacity to translate dense legal issues into clear arguments for judges and opposing counsel.

Zimmerman is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and in North Carolina, and he maintains active memberships in both the District of Columbia Bar and the North Carolina State Bar. His dual admissions allow him to handle matters in both jurisdictions and to advise clients on procedural and substantive issues that differ from one state to another. He draws on his clerkship and firm experience when preparing briefs and oral arguments.

Outside the courtroom, Zimmerman’s education and early career choices inform a steady approach to legal work. He combines an attention to detail with an interest in appellate advocacy. He remains engaged in the legal communities where he is licensed. He currently practices at Robinson Bradshaw and handles matters in the District of Columbia and North Carolina.
