About Emmett B.

Emmett B. Irwin earned his J.D. from the University of Baltimore School of Law before entering practice in Maryland. His legal education placed him in the state's professional community early, and he has maintained a continuous presence in Maryland's courts since becoming licensed by the Court of Appeals.

Irwin founded The Law Office of Emmett B. Irwin in 2016. He started the firm to provide representation in matters that intersect elder law and disability rights. The firm’s creation marked a shift from working under other firms to operating an independent practice focused on those client needs.

Over the past decade Irwin has built a practice that draws on several professional affiliations. Since 2016 he has served as Vice Chair of the Elder Law and Disability Rights Section of the Maryland State Bar. He has been Co-Chair of the Disability Benefits Section of the Maryland Association for Justice since 2019. In 2020 he joined the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and remains a member. He also serves on the Peer Review Committee for the Lawyer Grievance Commission of Maryland.

Those roles put him in regular contact with colleagues who handle guardianships, benefits appeals, and estate planning matters linked to disability and aging. He speaks routinely at local section meetings and participates in the committee work of bar groups. His committee work has involved review and discussion of professional standards and client-service issues within the state bar and related organizations.

Irwin’s license through the Maryland Court of Appeals enables him to represent clients across the state. He has kept his practice centered on issues that affect older adults and people with disabilities, often working on cases that combine administrative hearings and civil advocacy. He approaches cases with an eye toward the procedural steps that control benefit appeals and capacity matters, and he prepares the administrative record and litigation strategy accordingly.

Clients who come to his office typically seek help with disability benefits, guardianship and conservatorship questions, and legal planning tied to incapacity. The Law Office of Emmett B. Irwin operates as a small, specialized firm that handles these matters. He currently focuses his practice on elder law and disability benefits.
