About Edward J

Edward J Southcott's path to the law ran alongside a long stretch in law enforcement. He combined classroom study and on-the-job experience before taking out his own shingle. The result is a practice shaped by time behind the badge and time in the courtroom.

He earned an A.S. in Administration of Justice from Grossmont College in 1997, followed by a B.A. in Behavioral Science from National University in 1999. He later attended Thomas Jefferson School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 2015. Those credentials sit beside years spent working in public safety and public service.

Before entering private practice, Southcott served as a detective and deputy sheriff with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department beginning in 1995. That period provided steady exposure to investigations, evidence handling and the operational realities that often push cases into the legal system. Colleagues and clients describe his background as formative; it established a practical base for later legal work.

After completing law school, he opened the Law Office of Edward J. Southcott in 2015. He has maintained that solo practice since then. He is a member of the San Diego County Bar Association and has held a seat on its Military Law Section Executive Board as a board member at large since 2017. His bar affiliations extend to practice before California courts and the Federal Circuit, where he is licensed to appear.

Those who have followed his career note the continuity between his earlier work in the sheriff's department and his approach as counsel. His experience in investigations and public safety informs how he prepares cases, how he reviews records and how he interacts with witnesses. He balances that practical experience against the procedural and appellate realities of federal and state practice.

Southcott runs a solo office in California and handles matters brought in state venues as well as cases that fall within the Federal Circuit's purview. He continues to participate in local bar activities and the Military Law Section, keeping a visible presence in San Diego's legal community. He maintains his practice through the Law Office of Edward J. Southcott, representing clients in matters in California and before the Federal Circuit.
