About Edgar

Edgar Perez trained first as an engineer and then as a lawyer. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University in 2007. He remained at Santa Clara for law school and received his J.D. in 2012. That combination of technical training and legal education shapes his approach to intellectual property work.

After law school Perez qualified to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and is admitted in California. He moved into private practice at Fenwick & West LLP, where he joined a team that advises technology companies on protecting their inventions. His technical background allows him to read complex specifications and translate engineering concepts into patent filings.

Perez’s day-to-day work includes drafting and prosecuting patent applications. He prepares patent applications, responds to office actions, and negotiates claim language with examiners. He also advises clients on strategies for building and managing patent portfolios, helping to align prosecution decisions with broader business goals. His cases span electrical and software technologies, reflecting his undergraduate training.

Colleagues describe Perez as methodical. He breaks problems into parts and tackles each one in sequence. Clients tend to appreciate that style when deadlines loom and patent prosecution requires careful attention to detail. He writes specifications that aim to capture the technical contribution of an invention clearly and concisely. That clarity matters during examination and can make a difference if a patent later faces scrutiny.

At Fenwick & West LLP Perez has worked on matters for startups and established technology firms alike. He assists in preparing patentability assessments and freedom-to-operate analyses. He also advises on licensing arrangements and other transactional issues tied to intellectual property. His practice connects patent prosecution to the commercial uses of technology.

Outside of client work he keeps up with changes in patent practice and technology trends. He draws on both his engineering training and legal experience when counseling clients who are developing new hardware and software products. As of 2026 he continues his practice at Fenwick & West LLP, handling patent prosecution, counseling on portfolio strategy, and licensing and transactional matters for technology companies.
