About E. Parker

E. Parker Herring studied journalism before turning to law. He earned a B.A. in Journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1975 and later received a J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1985. Those academic years anchor a career that has stayed centered in North Carolina.

After law school, Herring spent a year clerking for the North Carolina Court of Appeals. That early exposure to appellate work gave him a close view of courtroom procedure and judicial decision-making. He moved from the appellate chambers into private practice and eventually helped establish Herring & Mills, PLLC, where he serves as a founding partner.

Herring’s legal credentials include board certification in family law by the North Carolina State Bar Association. That designation marks a recognized specialization rather than a general practice label. Over the years he has handled the kinds of disputes that commonly reach family courts: custody, support, property division and related contested matters. He has represented clients in both negotiated settlements and contested hearings.

Locally, Herring has taken leadership roles that extend beyond his firm. He serves as president of the Wake County Family Lawyers Association, a post that involves organizing local practitioners and addressing issues that affect family law practice in the county. He also leads the Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies Coalition of Wake County as its current president, a role that ties his professional interests to community health concerns.

Colleagues describe Herring as methodical in his preparation and direct in court. He favors clear factual presentation and steady attention to procedural detail. Those habits trace back to his earlier years in journalism and law. They also inform how he manages cases at his firm: focused casework, regular client updates and an emphasis on resolving the practical problems behind family disputes.

Herring’s practice remains rooted in North Carolina law. He maintains an office role as partner and lawyer at Herring & Mills, PLLC, where he continues to accept family law matters. He currently practices family law at Herring & Mills, PLLC.
