About Dwight O.
Dwight O. Slater earned his undergraduate degree in political science from Stanford University in 2002. He went on to law school at Emory University School of Law, completing his J.D. in 2006. Those formative years set the stage for a career concentrated on appellate litigation and legal argument.
After law school, Slater built a practice in Florida courts. He became a Board-Certified Specialist in Appellate Practice through The Florida Bar, a credential that signals advanced experience in appeals rather than a general qualification. His work has centered on the preparation of briefs, preservation of issues for review, and oral argument before appellate panels.
Slater maintains active ties to the legal community in Tallahassee and the First District. He is a member of the First District Appellate American Inns of Court and belongs to the Tallahassee Bar Association and the Tallahassee Barristers. Those memberships connect him to colleagues across trial and appellate benches and offer regular opportunities for peer exchange on procedural developments and appellate strategy.
At Cohn Slater, P.A., Slater handles appeals and related post-trial matters. He represents clients in state appellate courts and counsels trial lawyers on record preservation and appealable issues. His courtroom work is complemented by written advocacy, where attention to record detail and statutory construction tends to drive the positions he advances.
Colleagues describe his approach as attentive to the mechanics of appellate practice. He focuses on ensuring that issues are preserved below and framed clearly for appellate review. He often weighs the tactical tradeoffs between seeking rehearing or pursuing further appellate remedies.
He currently practices appellate law at Cohn Slater, P.A., concentrating on appeals in Florida state courts.
