About Dustin
Dustin MacFarlane began his legal path at the University of Northern California, where he earned his J.D. in 2008. He finished law school at a time when many young lawyers were reconsidering career plans. He moved quickly from the classroom into private practice.
Within a year of graduating, MacFarlane established California Probate and Trust, PC. He listed himself as owner in 2009. The move placed him squarely in the field of probate and trust matters at an early stage of his career. Setting up a boutique practice allowed him to concentrate on the procedures and paperwork that define estate administration.
MacFarlane holds membership in a number of local and regional bar organizations. His affiliations include the Sacramento County Bar Association, San Francisco County Bar Association, Santa Clara County Bar Association, Marin County Bar Association, Placer County Bar Association, and Alameda County Bar Association. He is also a member of the J. Reuben Clark Law Society and the Sacramento Bar Association. These memberships reflect steady involvement with the judicial community across several Northern California counties.
His practice has focused on probate administration, trust interpretation, and related fiduciary matters. He works with executors, trustees, and beneficiaries to move estates through court processes and to address disputes that can arise during administration. His files typically cover estate accounting, petition practice, and the document drafting needed to close estates or resolve trust issues.
Colleagues describe him as pragmatic in court filings and methodical in handling estate inventories and creditor claims. He spends substantial time preparing petitions and supporting declarations. The work requires a careful eye for statutory deadlines, procedural rules, and the often detailed accounting that courts expect from fiduciaries.
MacFarlane's practice also handles preventative work aimed at reducing future probate friction. He advises clients on trust drafting choices and assists in the preparation of estate planning documents. That work often overlaps with trust administration when a document's terms are later interpreted or challenged.
He maintains an active presence in the local bar community and stays engaged with county-level associations. That engagement appears to inform how he approaches contested matters and routine estate closures. He currently practices probate and trust law at California Probate and Trust, PC.
