About Douglas T.
Douglas T. Cohen earned a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University in 1986 and a J.D. from the University of Missouri–Columbia in 1996. He began his working life in newsrooms. Early years as an investigative reporter for The Palm Beach Post and Florida Today gave him a grounding in document work and witness interviews that would shape his later legal career.
His legal career began in public service. In 1996 he joined the El Paso County 4th Judicial District as a deputy district attorney. He returned to the Jefferson County First Judicial District in 2001 as a felony deputy and advanced to senior deputy district attorney, serving from 2001 to 2007 and again from 2011 to 2014. In between those stints in public prosecution, he worked as a senior attorney at Qwest Communications in 2007. In 2014 he took on a leadership role in private practice as partner and chief litigator at Peak Legal Services LLC.
Cohen has practiced in Colorado and Wyoming and holds membership in the Colorado Bar. He is also an active member of the Denver Bar Association, the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar and the Family Law Bar Association, all since 2011, and has belonged to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners since 2007. Those affiliations reflect a career that has crossed public prosecution, corporate legal work and private defense practice.
His courtroom experience includes years as a prosecutor handling felony matters and later roles defending clients in criminal and family law disputes. The investigative skills he developed as a journalist and then in fraud examination work inform his approach to case development and evidence review. Time in a corporate legal department added experience in regulatory and compliance issues.
Colleagues and clients have seen him work both sides of the aisle: charging and trying cases on behalf of the state, then representing individuals in criminal defense and family law matters. He has handled trials and hearings at multiple levels in Colorado. He maintains an active calendar that reflects his varied background in litigation and investigation.
He currently focuses his practice on criminal defense and family law matters in Colorado and Wyoming.
