About Douglas J.
Douglas J. Shumway studied general sciences and communications before turning to law. He earned an A.S. from the College of Eastern Utah in 1996, then a B.S. in Communications from Southern Utah University in 1998. He completed his legal education at the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 2003.
After law school, Shumway entered private practice and moved into firm leadership within a few years. By 2008 he was a partner at Shumway Van & Hansen. That year also marks the beginning of his membership in the Utah State Bar, a body he remains a member of today. He joined the Salt Lake City Bar Association in 2012 and continues that affiliation.
Shumway is licensed to practice in both Utah and Texas. He works out of the firm’s Salt Lake City office, handling matters that arise in the jurisdictions where he holds licenses. His dual admission reflects a practice that spans state lines and often requires familiarity with differing procedural rules and statutory schemes.
Colleagues describe him as steady and practical in approach. He brings a background in communications to client interactions and file management, and a basic science foundation from his earlier studies. Those elements inform how he organizes casework and communicates complex issues to clients and opposing counsel. He has experience managing litigation and transactional work, drawing on a practice built within the structure of a regional firm.
Within the local legal community, Shumway has maintained ongoing ties through bar association membership. His association with the Salt Lake City Bar Association links him to civic and professional events in the region. His standing in the Utah State Bar dates to 2008 and remains current.
He has remained at Shumway Van & Hansen since becoming partner, working from the firm’s Salt Lake City office. His daily practice involves representing clients across Utah and Texas and handling matters that arise in those states’ courts and administrative bodies. He continues to practice actively in both jurisdictions.
