About Dohyun (David)

Dohyun (David) Ahn combines engineering training with a legal education. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul National University in 1995. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Illinois College of Law in 2003 and returned to engineering studies for a Master of Science in Electronic Engineering from Hanyang Graduate School of Engineering in 2006. That sequence of degrees informs how he approaches technical legal questions.

Ahn moved into intellectual property work after law school. His registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and the Korean Intellectual Property Office reflects that trajectory. He is also admitted to practice in California and New York. Those registrations and admissions allow him to handle patent prosecution and related matters across multiple jurisdictions.

He joined Fenwick & West LLP where he developed practice experience that draws on both legal training and technical background. At the firm, he has worked on patent matters that involve claim drafting, prosecution strategy, and managing filings in the United States and Korea. His engineering degrees give him an ability to read technical disclosures and to translate them into patent specifications and office-action responses.

Colleagues describe Ahn as methodical and precise in handling technical documents and deadlines. He handles cross-border filing timelines and coordinates responses to foreign patent offices. His combined familiarity with U.S. patent practice and Korean patent procedures helps clients who have portfolios that span both countries. He has also worked on cross-border transactional matters that require alignment of patent strategy and business objectives.

Ahn’s background in mechanical and electronic engineering complements typical patent practice areas such as electronics, software-related inventions, and mechanical devices. He reviews inventions, prepares applications, and advises on prosecution paths that reflect the client’s commercial aims. He also assists in opinion work and clearance assessments when clients consider product launches or design changes.

Outside of patent filings, his practice involves counseling clients on procedural issues at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and coordinating with foreign counsel when international prosecution is required. He combines technical literacy and legal procedure to manage complex patent schedules. He currently practices at Fenwick & West LLP and focuses on intellectual property law, particularly patent matters.
