About Devon C.

Devon C. Bruce is an Illinois-educated lawyer whose career blends courtroom work and organizing roles inside bar groups. He earned a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1990 and a J.D. from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1993. Those years on campus left a long-running connection: he later served as chairman of the law school’s Alumni Advisory Board and of its Fundraising Committee, and he remains a member of the Cribbet Society.

Bruce built a practice anchored in litigation. He has been active in both trial and appellate circles. His memberships tell that story: he belongs to the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association and sits on several of its panels, including the Supreme Court Appeals Committee, the Amicus Curiae Committee, and the Legislative Committee. He is also affiliated with the Appellate Lawyers Association and the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice. Early in his involvement with legal education and competition, he served as presiding judge at regional mock trial finals in 2001 for the American Trial Lawyers Association.

Professional association work has threaded through his career. At the Illinois State Bar Association he served as chairman of the Young Lawyers Division and has been involved in the Task Force on Unauthorized Practice of Law. He has been a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, where his name appears on committee rosters tied to lead paint issues in Chicago. For a spell in the late 1990s he was a member of the Chicago Inn of Court.

Community engagement shows up in several directions. He serves on the board of Working in the Schools (WITS), a program that places volunteers in urban classrooms. He has volunteered as an attorney for the Palm Beach County Recount Committee. Those volunteer roles stand alongside professional committee work and reflect an interest in legal education and public processes.

Colleagues describe Bruce as someone who travels easily between the demands of a trial calendar and the different pace of appellate briefing. He has balanced courtroom advocacy with time spent shaping policy and procedure inside bar groups. His career path is recognizably rooted in Illinois law schools and Illinois bar life, though his volunteer activities have reached beyond state lines.

He currently practices in Illinois, handling civil litigation matters at both the trial and appellate levels and remaining active in bar committees and legal education initiatives.
