About Derek K.

Derek K. Prosser built his academic foundation in business before turning to law. He completed two B.B.A. degrees at the University of North Dakota, earning a degree in accounting in 2003 and a degree in banking and financial economics in 2004 after beginning his studies in 1999. He then attended the University of Houston Law Center, where he completed his J.D. in 2007, finishing a course of study that began in 2004.

Prosser began his legal career in bankruptcy practice. In 2008 he joined Tyler, Bartl, Ramsdell & Counts PLC as a bankruptcy lawyer and partner. That role placed him squarely in creditor and debtor work, appearing in bankruptcy courts and managing contested matters typical of insolvency practice. The early years of his practice were marked by casework for a range of clients, including individuals and businesses confronting financial restructuring.

In 2013 he became a partner at Toronjo & Prosser Law. The move reflected a steady progression from associate-level responsibilities to firm leadership. At Toronjo & Prosser he took on a broader slate of responsibilities, supervising case strategy and client intake while continuing to handle bankruptcy filings, adversary proceedings and negotiations with secured and unsecured creditors. His experience spans both consumer and commercial insolvency matters.

Prosser is licensed to practice in Virginia and Texas. He served on the Northern Virginia Bankruptcy Bar Association from 2011 through 2013, taking part in the local professional community that focuses on practice issues and court procedures in the region. His background in accounting and banking economics informs his approach to the financial aspects of bankruptcy cases, allowing him to parse schedules, examine estate assets and discuss repayment structures in clear terms.

Colleagues describe him as straightforward in court and thorough in preparation. He approaches cases with attention to financial detail and an eye for procedural deadlines. That combination has shaped the way he advises clients on the practical implications of restructuring, liquidation and negotiated settlements.

He currently practices at Toronjo & Prosser Law, where his work concentrates on bankruptcy and related commercial matters.
