About Derek K.

Derek K. Oliverson built a career that moves from patrol work to the bench and then into private practice. He earned a B.S. in Criminal Justice and Political Science from Southern Utah University in 2006 and completed his J.D. at Creighton University School of Law in 2009. In 2010 he attended the Arizona Supreme Court’s New Judge Orientation, a step that followed his early appointments to the bench.

He began his public-service career as a police officer with the Henderson Police Department in 2002. After law school he served as a deputy county lawyer in Mohave County in 2009, gaining courtroom and prosecutorial experience early on. That same period marked the start of his standing as a lawyer in Arizona.

Oliverson moved into judicial roles soon after. He was presiding judge at Page Magistrate Court in 2010 and later served as a judge in Glendale City Court in 2012. Those posts exposed him to a steady stream of misdemeanor and preliminary matters and gave him a practical perspective on how courts handle DUI and criminal cases.

Following his time on the bench, he returned to private practice. He joined Schill Law Group as an associate lawyer in 2014. Two years later he founded Oliverson Law DUI & Criminal Defense and, in 2017, became an owner of Oliverson & Huss Law PLLC. His path from prosecutor and judge to defense counsel traces a range of courtroom roles that informs how he approaches evidence and procedure today.

He maintains memberships in professional organizations tied to criminal defense. Since 2017 he has been a member of both Arizona Lawyers for Criminal Justice and the DUI Defense Lawyers Association. He is also listed as a member of the Order of Barristers, and his professional listings note continuous lawyer status beginning in 2009.

The arc of his work — patrol officer, deputy county lawyer, magistrate and municipal judge, associate, then firm owner — gives him firsthand familiarity with law enforcement, charging decisions and trial practice. He handles cases in Arizona and focuses his practice on DUI and criminal defense matters. His current practice is based in Arizona and centers on DUI and criminal defense representation.
