About David R
David R Martin built a legal foundation in literature and economics before moving into law. He graduated from Amherst College in 1980 with a B.A. in Literature and Economics. He later earned a J.D. from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras, and completed an LL.M. in Taxation at New York University School of Law in 2001.
Those academic choices shaped the arc of his career. The LL.M. in Taxation added a technical layer to the general law training he received in Puerto Rico. It also guided the kinds of matters he handled as he moved through several firms in the 1990s. The combination of humanities, economics and tax study gives him a mixed perspective on legal problems.
His early professional years were spent as an associate at a string of established firms. He began at McConnell Valdes in 1989, joined Robins Kaplan LLP as an associate in 1990, and later worked at Kilpatrick Stockton LLP starting in 1994. Those posts exposed him to transactional work and the kinds of corporate and tax questions that often touch cross-border and multi-jurisdictional clients.
Martin holds licenses in Georgia, Puerto Rico and Florida. That multi-jurisdictional standing reflects both his educational roots and his practice history. Over time he handled matters that required attention to tax rules, corporate structure and financial analysis. His background in taxation and economics informed his approach to those issues, whether advising on entity selection, tax consequences of transactions, or regulatory considerations affecting financial arrangements.
He is listed as a current member of the American Finance Association, a professional affiliation that aligns with his interest in finance-related legal questions. His career path shows steady movement between firms and practice areas related to corporate and tax law. He has moved from associative roles in larger firms to establishing his own office.
Today he operates from D.R. Martin, LLC. He works on matters that draw on his tax training and experience across Georgia, Puerto Rico and Florida. His current practice focuses on tax and financial matters across those jurisdictions.
