About David Hobson
David N — Hobson, Jr. has been practicing family law in Beaverton, Oregon, since 1985. He is a member of the Oregon State Bar and has experience in family law matters, including divorce, child custody, and spousal support. He has appeared in the Oregon Circuit Courts, Court of Appeals. Oregon Supreme Court, as well as in administrative law proceedings. Mr. Hobson is certified by the Oregon Supreme Court as a Reference Judge for Family Law Cases in Washington County and by the Oregon Court of Appeals as an Appellate Settlement Conference Mediator.
He has been a member of the Washington County Arbitration Panel for more than 15 years. Raised in Portland, Oregon, Mr. Hobson graduated from Jesuit High School in Beaverton in 1977. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale College in 1981 and returned to Oregon to obtain his Juris Doctor from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1985. Throughout his career, Mr. Hobson has been involved in numerous published decisions that have influenced family law in Oregon. Notable cases include Carlin and Carlin, 62 Or App 350 (1983), which established that once an Oregon Court orders a parent to pay support, the court has continuing authority over that parent even if they move out of the state.
Compton and Compton, 187 Or App 142, 66 P3d 572 (2003), demonstrating that a child’s “non-parent” guardians may legally enter into a contract to pay child support. Mr. Hobson is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, Oregon State Bar Association, Washington County Bar Association, Multnomah County Bar Association, and the Oregon Academy of Family Law Practitioners. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Washington County Bar Association and as Chair and Treasurer of its Continuing Legal Education Committee. In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Hobson has been active in community service. He served as the Vice President of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Washington County and as a Board Member of the Oregon Defense Attorneys Coalition (ODAC).
