About David
David Balmer studied business and political science at Bethel University & Seminary, earning his B.A. in 2000. He returned to law school later and received a J.D. from William Mitchell College of Law in 2012. Those academic chapters set a clear path from private industry into legal practice.
After college, Balmer worked in the private sector as an assistant vice president at John B. Collins Associates, Inc., a role he held beginning in 2000. He shifted toward law during his time at William Mitchell, serving as a student lawyer in 2010 at the First District Public Defender’s Office. That experience placed him in courtrooms and client interviews early in his legal training.
In 2012 he opened Balmer Law Office, PLLC, where he is owner and lawyer. He is admitted to practice in Minnesota. His practice grew out of his public defender work and his interest in criminal defense. He has maintained memberships in the Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2013 and in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 2014. Those affiliations reflect a continuing engagement with the professional community that handles criminal matters in state and federal systems.
Beyond the courtroom, Balmer serves as chairman of Sterling Education Services, a post he has held since 2006. In that capacity he oversees organizational governance and strategy for the educational enterprise. The role runs alongside his legal practice and provides a different set of managerial responsibilities than day-to-day case work.
Balmer’s career trajectory runs from business to public defense to private practice. He moved from assistant vice president to student advocate, then to firm founder and lawyer. Today he continues to run Balmer Law Office, PLLC, representing clients in criminal matters and handling litigation and pretrial work at the state level.
He currently practices criminal defense at Balmer Law Office, PLLC.
