About Cullen A
Cullen A Tonry began his legal path at Southern University Law Center, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 2004 after starting law school in 2001. The curriculum there shaped his courtroom instincts and introduced him to trial practice. He returned to Louisiana courts soon after and established his legal practice in the state he serves.
Early in his career Tonry joined several professional organizations that align with courtroom work. He became a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, the Louisiana Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice and the Louisiana Association for Justice in 2004. A year later he added membership in the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Those affiliations have been active parts of his professional life since the mid-2000s.
Tonry moved into firm leadership in 2012 when he took on the role of managing partner at Tonry Law Office, LLC. In that job he has overseen case strategy, client intake and trial preparation. The managing partner title signals a shift from solo advocacy to running an office that regularly handles contested matters and courtroom appearances.
His professional memberships indicate the types of cases he handles. Tonry’s practice reflects trial work, including criminal defense and civil litigation. He appears in Louisiana courts and prepares cases for jury trials. Colleagues describe his approach as pragmatic: he prepares to try cases and looks for resolution when it serves clients’ interests. He has remained engaged with national and state trial organizations, attending seminars and participating in continuing legal education to stay current on trial practice and evidence rules.
Outside the courtroom, Tonry’s background at Southern University Law Center remains a touchstone. The school’s clinical programs and trial advocacy offerings were formative for him and continue to inform how he trains younger lawyers in his office. As managing partner he balances casework with supervising associates and guiding firm administration. He currently leads Tonry Law Office, LLC, where he handles criminal defense and civil trial matters.
