About Courtney Van
Courtney Van Winkle trained first as a historian of ideas and then as a lawyer. She completed a Bachelor of Arts at Vanderbilt University in 1986 and earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Richmond School of Law in 1990. Her legal studies were interrupted by practical experience; in 1989 she served as an intern at the Office of the Lawyer General, Commonwealth of Virginia, an early exposure to public law and state practice.
After law school she moved quickly into trial work. By 1990 she was listed as a partner and trial lawyer at Allen, Allen, Allen, & Allen, P.C. There she developed courtroom experience and handled civil litigation matters. Courtroom work has been a consistent thread in her career. She is admitted to practice in Virginia and in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Van Winkle’s practice has been shaped by litigation and by professional service. She holds a leadership post as president of the Richmond chapter of the Virginia Women Lawyers Association. Her peers encounter her through local and national groups. She is a member of the Richmond Bar Association and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. At the national level she participates in the American Bar Association and the American Association for Justice. She also serves on the National Advisory Board of The Association of Plaintiff Interstate Trucking Lawyers of America (APITLAmerica).
Those roles reflect a lawyer who spends as much time building networks as she does preparing cases. Colleagues describe her as methodical at trial and persistent in discovery. She has handled jury trials and complex pretrial litigation, and she has experience coordinating multi-party matters. Court filings, depositions and evidentiary hearings are familiar terrain.
Her work in the Richmond office has a local footprint. She combines trial practice with involvement in bar activities and association governance. The mixture keeps her connected to developments in Virginia law and to the procedural rules of federal court in the Eastern District.
Outside the courtroom, Van Winkle has contributed to professional discussions through association work and chapter programming. She continues to lead the Richmond chapter of the Virginia Women Lawyers Association and to participate in national plaintiff-oriented practitioner groups.
She practices from the Richmond office of Allen, Allen, Allen, & Allen, P.C., handling civil litigation and trial matters in Virginia and in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
