About Courtney L

Courtney L Thom built her path to the law on two Midwestern campuses. She earned a Bachelor of Science in sociology, with a criminal justice concentration, from Central Michigan University in 2004. She then completed her legal studies at Michigan State University College of Law, receiving her J.D. in 2006.

Her early legal work began inside the courthouse. In 2007 she served as a judicial law clerk for Midland County government. The clerkship introduced her to day-to-day judicial decision-making and the mechanics of trial court procedure. From that vantage she moved into government service, taking a post as an assistant state lawyer in Florida in 2009. A year later she returned to Michigan and worked as an assistant prosecuting lawyer in Isabella County, where she handled matters typical of a county prosecutor’s office.

After several years in public service she shifted to private practice. In 2011 she joined Mathieu & Lee, PLC as an associate lawyer. That role expanded her exposure to client counseling and courtroom advocacy in a private firm setting. In 2014 she took an associate position at Brown Law, PLC, continuing litigation and trial work while adapting to firm practice and case management responsibilities.

Across her roles, Thom accumulated direct courtroom experience and regular contact with criminal docket preparation, arraignments, hearings and trials. Her background spans clerkship work, state-level representation and county prosecution, followed by years in firm environments. Those steps gave her a mix of procedural knowledge and hands-on litigation experience that informs how she approaches case development and courtroom strategy.

Colleagues and records show she maintains membership in professional associations, and she is admitted to practice in both Florida and Michigan. That dual admission has allowed her to practice across different state systems and respond to a variety of legal matters arising in each jurisdiction. She has also balanced trial work with the demands of advising clients on procedural rules and courtroom expectations.

Now more than a decade into a mixed public and private career, Thom’s experience sits at the intersection of government practice and private litigation. She practices law in Florida and Michigan.
