About Collin C.
Collin C. McKean is an attorney licensed in Oregon and Washington. He studied at Warner Pacific College, earning a B.A. in American Studies and a B.S. in Business Administration, and completed a J.D. at Lewis & Clark Law School in 2005. While in law school he earned an Environmental and Natural Resources Law Certificate, an unusual credential for someone whose career would center largely on family law.
McKean began practicing in the Portland area in the mid-2000s. Early roles included founding McKean Law LLC in 2006 and serving as an associate at Gevurtz Menashe Larson & Howe PC in 2007. He established McKean Law Office in 2010 and then joined McKinley Irvin as a partner in 2012. In 2015 he became principal of McKean Smith, a firm that maintains offices in Portland and Vancouver.
Over the years McKean has built a practice tied closely to family law. He handles divorce proceedings, parenting-plan disputes, and related financial issues. He also practices collaborative law and mediation, representing clients who seek alternative dispute resolution as well as those heading to contested hearings. His bar memberships in both states allow him to represent clients across the Oregon–Washington border.
That cross-jurisdictional work mirrors his involvement in professional organizations. He is active in the family law sections of the Oregon and Washington state bars and belongs to the Clark County Bar Association’s family law section. He serves as treasurer of the Oregon Chapter of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts and sits on the Washington State Bar Association Law Clerk Board. His participation extends to the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and to local access-to-justice efforts through the Lawyers Campaign for Equal Justice advisory board.
McKean’s early public service on bar leadership bodies included a term on the Oregon State Bar’s New Lawyers Division executive committee and a stint as a region representative in the Bar’s House of Delegates. Those roles gave him experience in bar governance and legal education that he has carried into later committee work on parenting-plan outreach and statewide family law advisory projects.
Clients and colleagues describe him as pragmatic and direct in the courtroom and quieter at the negotiation table. He divides his time between the Portland and Vancouver offices of McKean Smith, where he continues to handle family law cases, collaborative matters, mediation, and parenting-plan work.
