About Colby C.
Colby C. Vokey trained in both civilian and military law before beginning a civilian practice. He earned a Master of Laws in criminal law from the Judge Advocate General's School of the Army in Charlottesville in 2002. He also holds a Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in political science from Texas A&M University.
Vokey's early career was spent in uniform. After earning his law degree he served in the United States Marine Corps Judge Advocate General's Corps. Titles on his record include senior defense counsel in 1998 and chief prosecutor and officer in charge in 1999. In 2003 he was named regional defense counsel for the Marine Corps, a role he carried out during a period of intense legal work for service members.
He moved into private practice later in the 2000s. In 2008 he was a partner at the firm Fitzpatrick Hagood Smith & Uhl. Five years later he began operating his own office, listed as The Law Office of Colby Vokey, P.C. That transition marked a shift from military litigation to civilian criminal defense and related matters.
Vokey has argued and appeared in a range of federal and military venues. His admitted jurisdictions include the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. He is also admitted to practice in North Dakota and Texas and in several federal districts within Texas, including the Eastern, Western and Northern Districts.
Professional affiliations reflect a continuing interest in trial work and military justice. He is a member of the Trial Lawyers College and has served as a staff instructor there. He has been associated with the National Institute of Military Justice as an advisory board member and has membership in the Military Law Section of the State Bar of Texas. He also belongs to the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the College of the State Bar of Texas. Records show involvement with The Constitution Project dating back to 2009.
Colleagues describe Vokey as a lawyer who built a practice from courtroom experience in uniform to the civilian bar. He has handled both prosecution and defense roles, and that perspective informs how he approaches cases. He splits his time between courtroom work and client counseling.
He currently operates The Law Office of Colby Vokey, P.C., and his practice focuses on criminal defense and military law.
