About Clayton
Clayton Allen took an unconventional path through graduate school before settling into trial work. He earned a Bachelor of Science in economics from Yale University in 1979, followed by an MBA from the University of Virginia School of Business in 1981. He completed his legal education at the University of Virginia School of Law, receiving a J.D. in 1983.
Early in his career he gained exposure to public service. He served as an intern in the Lawyer General’s Office of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and in 1981 he served on a task force at the Office of Management and Budget in the Executive Office of the President. Those placements put him in close contact with government operations at both the state and federal level.
After law school he moved quickly into private practice. In 1983 he joined Allen, Allen, Allen, & Allen, P.C. as a partner and trial lawyer. That role has defined his professional life. He has worked in litigation and courtroom practice for decades, representing clients across matters that require trial experience and courtroom procedure.
Allen’s affiliations reflect a sustained engagement with trial bar organizations. He holds memberships in the American Association for Justice and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He is also a member of the Richmond Bar Association, where he once served as chairman of the Young Lawyers Section. Nationally, he was involved at the founding level of the National Civil Justice Foundation.
Colleagues describe him as the sort of lawyer who prefers the courthouse to the conference room. He has spent years building skills in trial preparation, witness examination and courtroom advocacy. Those are practical, learned abilities gained from repeated work in contested matters rather than from a single landmark case or public office.
Outside of litigation he has drawn on his business training when handling complex cases that involve economic analysis or multi-party disputes. His MBA and earlier economics training inform the way he evaluates damages, assesses settlement options and structures case strategy.
He remains licensed to practice in Virginia and continues to handle civil litigation. As of 2026 he practices in Virginia, concentrating on trial litigation and related civil matters.
