About Christian Jay
Christian Jay Sanchelima studied engineering before turning to the law. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the University of Florida, completing his studies in 2009. That technical foundation has been a throughline in a career that bridges engineering and intellectual property law.
Sanchelima began working at Sanchelima & Associates, P.A. as an engineering intern in 2005. He returned to the firm as an engineer in 2010 and then took on a law clerk role in 2011 while pursuing legal qualifications. He registered as a patent agent in 2012 and moved into the role of patent and trademark lawyer in 2013. The firm, which has been operating since 1977, has been the constant workplace for this sequence of roles.
The progression from intern to attorney is reflected in the range of work he handles. His early engineering responsibilities involved technical analysis and development support. As a law clerk and later as a patent agent, he learned patent drafting and prosecution procedures. Since becoming a lawyer, he has handled patent and trademark matters that require understanding both technical detail and legal process. He is admitted to practice in Florida and is authorized to appear before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He also holds registration to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Colleagues and clients see the engineering background show up in the practical elements of prosecution and counseling. He prepares patent applications aimed at satisfying statutory requirements and technical disclosure standards. He manages correspondence with examiners, performs prior art review, and supervises trademark filings. The work mixes technical description, claim drafting, and procedural strategy. His experience as an engineer informs how he reads patent specifications and communicates complex concepts in simpler terms.
Sanchelima’s career path is steady rather than flashy. He moved through clearly defined roles inside the same firm, building responsibilities as he gained credentials. That continuity has meant extended exposure to a broad array of technologies and repeated hands-on work before the Patent Office and in trademark registration processes.
He continues to practice at Sanchelima & Associates, P.A., where he handles patent preparation and prosecution as well as trademark filings and related intellectual property matters.
