About Chris

Chris Shumate earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2003, after completing undergraduate studies there as well. He finished a rigorous legal education at a time when the profession was adapting to rapid changes in technology and case law. The details of his early academic focus remain straightforward: a J.D. in hand and the launch of a legal career.

He moved into practice shortly after graduation. Over the years he secured admission to multiple jurisdictions, including South Carolina and North Carolina, and to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. Those admissions have allowed him to appear in both state and federal venues. He has built a practice that operates across the Carolinas, drawing on courtroom procedure and state regulatory frameworks alike.

Clients and colleagues describe him as pragmatic in the courtroom. He favors clear briefing and direct argument. He writes plainly and chooses his moments in hearings. His approach reflects steady preparation; he treats facts and precedent with equal care. He is comfortable in the give-and-take of litigation, and he has guided matters through the motion process and into trial settings when required.

Outside the courtroom he handles case strategy and client counseling. He spends time reviewing evidence, drafting pleadings and managing discovery. He also coordinates with experts when complex technical or factual questions arise. That combination of tasks shapes day-to-day practice and influences how cases move from intake to resolution.

Throughout his career he has practiced in both North and South Carolina courts. Admission to the federal district court in the western part of North Carolina has expanded his ability to take on matters that cross state lines or invoke federal jurisdiction. Working in overlapping state and federal systems requires attention to procedural detail. He prepares filings to meet differing rules and timelines, and he adapts arguments to the audience at hand.

He remains based in the Carolinas and continues to appear before state and federal tribunals. His work centers on representing clients in matters brought in South Carolina and North Carolina courts, including the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. He currently focuses on representing clients in state and federal courts across North and South Carolina.
