About Charles E. Iliff
Charles E. Iliff Jr. has been a visible figure in Maryland’s legal community for decades. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Williams College in 1962 and returned to school to take his law degree at the University of Virginia School of Law, receiving an LL.B. in 1969. Those formative years set the stage for a long career that has spanned trial work, appellate practice and service beyond the courtroom.
After law school Iliff built a practice that has included appearances in state and federal forums. He is admitted in Maryland and before several federal courts, including the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the United States Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland and the U.S. Court of Claims. Those admissions reflect a practice that moves between trial and appellate work and that occasionally reaches national forums.
He has been associated with Iliff, Meredith, Wildberger & Brennan, P.C., where he has practiced for many years. The firm listing ties his name to a small, long-established Maryland practice. Over time his work has incorporated courtroom litigation as well as alternative dispute resolution, a combination suggested by his memberships in organizations focused on trial advocacy and ADR.
Iliff’s associative life extends beyond the bar. He is a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Maryland State Bar Association, and he has maintained memberships in the American Bar Association, the Baltimore City Bar Association and the Maryland Bar Foundation. He has also been a member of ADR of Maryland, Inc., which aligns with the arbitration and mediation side of civil practice.
A notable thread in his extracurricular commitments is aviation. He belongs to the Aircraft Owners & Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Lawyer Pilots Bar Association, an uncommon set of memberships that reflects an interest in aviation matters both practical and legal. Locally, he has been part of the Severn River Land Trust as an honorary board member since 1995, indicating engagement in community and conservation causes.
He served as chairman of the Trial Courts Judicial Nominating Commission for Anne Arundel County from 2003 to 2007, a role that put him in the middle of judicial selection at the county level. He is also a member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference (permanent), tying him to regional judicial and legal discussions.
Iliff continues to practice at Iliff, Meredith, Wildberger & Brennan, P.C. His work today spans trial and appellate litigation, arbitration and aviation-related matters.
