About Charles
Charles Cantine trained first as an engineer and later turned to the law. He earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from The Catholic University of America in 1986 and completed his J.D. at Fordham University School of Law in 1999. Those two fields have informed a career that sits at the intersection of technology and legal practice.
After law school Cantine secured registration with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 1999. He gained admission to the New York bar in 2000 and to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in 2001. His appellate admissions also include the 11th and 3rd Circuits. The sequence marks an early and consistent alignment with patent and appellate work.
Cantine spent significant portions of his career at national law firms. He served as partner at STROOCK & STROOCK & LAVAN LLP and later returned there as Special Counsel. He also held partner roles at King & Spalding and Troutman Sanders LLP. Those posts involved client counseling and litigation in matters where technical background mattered as much as legal strategy. Over time he moved from large firm platforms to roles that combined technical counseling, prosecution and litigation support.
More recently he joined Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig. At that firm he continued to advise on intellectual property matters that touch on chemistry and related technologies. His practice has included patent prosecution before the USPTO and appellate filings in federal courts. The record of bar and appellate admissions supports work that crosses administrative and judicial forums.
Colleagues describe him as someone who brings engineering training into legal analysis. That practical understanding of technical subject matter informs how he evaluates patent claims, drafts specifications, and prepares appeals. He approaches issues in stages: identify the technical core, test legal theories against that core, then present the results in writing or at argument. The method helps when cases require clear translation between engineers and judges.
Cantine maintains membership in the State Bar of New York, where he has been listed since 2000. He is based at the offices of Dunlap Bennett & Ludwig and continues to accept matters that involve patent prosecution, patent-related litigation, and appellate work in federal courts. His current practice focuses on patent prosecution, appeals, and litigation support in technology-driven matters.
