About Charles C.

Charles C. McCloskey combines technical training and legal education in a career that moves between engineering, military service and intellectual property law. He earned a B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Notre Dame in 1986 and completed his J.D. at Saint Louis University School of Law in 1998. The two degrees frame a professional path that blends practical design experience and legal analysis.

After Notre Dame, McCloskey served as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers beginning in 1990. That posting placed him on project management and construction oversight teams during the early part of his career. He moved into the private sector as a project engineer for Butler Manufacturing Co. in 1994, where he worked on structural and production challenges tied to building systems.

Law school redirected his career toward law and patents. Graduating in 1998, McCloskey built on his engineering background to pursue intellectual property. He qualified as a patent attorney before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and began practicing patent law in Missouri. In 2004 he established Charles C. McCloskey, LLC, a firm that has handled patent prosecution and related matters since then.

His practice draws on years of technical work. Clients have included inventors and businesses seeking patent protection for mechanical and structural inventions. McCloskey’s engineering training informs patent drafting and claim construction, and his experience managing projects helps in assessing patent portfolios and prosecution strategies. He is admitted to practice in Missouri and maintains his patent agent status before the USPTO.

Outside the office he has been active in civic and professional groups for two decades. He joined several local and national organizations in the early 2000s, serving in leadership roles. He has held positions on boards and as treasurer for the Inventors Association of St. Louis since 2001. He has been involved with the Rotary Club of Clayton Ladue and the St. Louis County Pachyderm Club since 2004, holding board and presidential posts. He is also a member of the Chesterfield Chamber of Commerce, the Bar Association of Metro St. Louis, the St. Louis County Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Missouri Venture Forum. His membership in the Engineers Club of St. Louis ran from 2003 to 2004.

McCloskey brings a practice shaped by hands-on engineering, military leadership and legal training. He currently practices at Charles C. McCloskey, LLC, concentrating on patent prosecution and related intellectual property matters.
