About Charles C.
Charles C. Abut built his legal foundation at Columbia University, where he earned a B.A., and then at Cornell University, where he received his J.D. Those academic years set the stage for a long career in New Jersey law. He entered the New Jersey bar in 1972 and has maintained active membership in the New Jersey State Bar since then.
Early in his career he gravitated toward family law. Over time he added mediation to his practice. He holds certification as a Matrimonial Law Lawyer from the Supreme Court of New Jersey. He is also an accredited mediator through the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts. Those credentials reflect a professional pathway that balances courtroom and alternative dispute resolution work.
Colleagues describe him as steady and methodical. Clients have relied on him for navigating divorce proceedings, equitable distribution, child custody matters and related financial issues. He has worked on cases that require close attention to procedural detail and to the practical realities that clients face. He prefers direct communication and clear explanation of options, rather than legal jargon.
Across more than five decades in practice, he has seen the law evolve. Statutes and case law in family law have changed, and so have approaches to settlement and mediation. He has adapted by combining a litigation background with formal mediation training. That combination allows him to take a case to trial when necessary and to pursue negotiated resolutions when appropriate.
Today he remains active in New Jersey legal circles. His certification in matrimonial law is current, and his mediator accreditation allows him to handle settlement conferences and court-referred mediations. He continues to represent clients across a range of family law matters and to serve as a neutral mediator in disputes. He currently concentrates on matrimonial law and mediation in New Jersey.
