About Chad
Chad Mathis trained as a lawyer in classrooms and abroad. He earned his Juris Doctor from DePaul College of Law, where his studies emphasized business and entertainment law and included coursework in international trade and finance during programs in Beijing and Shanghai, China. Before law school he completed a liberal arts undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University, majoring in English and history while also studying music performance.
Those academic interests shaped the early arc of his career. After law school he gravitated toward matters that intersected commerce and creativity. He handled transactional work, contract drafting and review, and advising on business structures that serve artists, small companies and entrepreneurs. His legal education and overseas study informed how he approached cross-border questions and deal terms that involve foreign partners.
In practice he has spent time on corporate transactions and entertainment-related agreements. That has included negotiating licensing deals, artist and producer agreements, and commercial contracts that touch on intellectual property and distribution. He has also worked on matters tied to international trade and finance, helping clients understand obligations that arise when contracts cross jurisdictions or when funding and investment come from abroad.
Colleagues describe his approach as pragmatic. He tends to break complex problems into clear choices and explain consequences in plain terms. That style suits clients who need straightforward advice about forming entities, protecting creative rights, or structuring cross-border transactions. It also fits situations where timing and precise contract language change the economics of a deal.
Outside of direct deal work, his background in English and music gives him an appreciation for the practical concerns of creators and managers. He translates artistic and technical needs into legal terms. That makes him comfortable working on both the creative and the commercial sides of an agreement.
He currently maintains a private practice where he focuses on business and entertainment law, including transactional work and cross-border commercial matters.
