About Caleb B.
Caleb B. Koufman built a pathway to law that began in the liberal arts and moved through education into the courtroom. He earned a B.A. from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2010, studying comparative literature, philosophy and Spanish. He stayed in education long enough to complete an M.S.Ed. in special education from Simmons College in 2014, and then turned to law at Northeastern University School of Law, where he received his J.D. in 2017.
While at Northeastern, Koufman combined academic work with hands-on training. He served on the Northeastern University Law Review and worked as a 3:03 certified student-lawyer in the Prisoners Rights Clinic. He spent time as a judicial intern for a United States District Court judge and interned on homicide matters at the Suffolk district office. Those roles exposed him to both trial practice and the procedural realities of criminal litigation.
Before and during law school he held positions that crossed legal and educational lines. In 2014 he worked as a paralegal at Koufman & Frederick, LLP. He also worked as a private tutor and special education advocate and held a faculty role at The Landmark School. That mix of special-education training and early legal work informs how he approaches client communication and case preparation.
After earning his degree, Koufman served as a trial lawyer for the Committee for Public Counsel Services, where he handled courtroom duties and client advocacy. He later consulted for the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute Corporation in 2022. His membership in organizations such as the State Bar of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Massachusetts Board of Bar Overseers and the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers signals ongoing engagement with the local legal community. He also serves on the board of the Federal Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section.
Koufman holds Massachusetts licensure in moderate disabilities for levels 5–12, reflecting his earlier work in education. That credential sits alongside a practice history that includes public defense, prisoner-rights representation and courtroom trial work. He manages both the tactical and practical aspects of casework, drawing on experience as a trial lawyer and clinical student-lawyer.
He now practices at Koufman Law Group, LLC. His work centers on criminal defense and civil-rights matters in Massachusetts and in the federal courts that hear cases from the state.
