About Brian W. Ritter

Brian W. Ritter Jr. is an attorney who concentrates his practice on estate planning, probate and elder law. He runs a small firm that handles wills, trusts, guardianship matters and the kinds of problems that arise as clients age. His work reflects years of practical experience in both private practice and government service.

Ritter earned a B.A. in political science from the University of South Carolina–Columbia in 2005. He then attended the University of Baltimore School of Law, where he completed his J.D. in 2011. Those years included stints in legal offices tied to health care and hospital administration, which shaped his later interest in issues that affect older adults and their families.

While in law school and immediately after, Ritter held a series of clerk and analyst positions. In 2010 he worked as a law clerk for the Johns Hopkins Hospital Office of the General Counsel and for MEDVAL, LLC. He also served as a program analyst in the Medicare Appeals Division at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Those roles exposed him to federal benefits systems, administrative appeals and the intersection of health care and legal regulation.

Ritter moved into private practice after law school. In 2012 he joined Byrd & Byrd, LLC as a lawyer. He later took on a leadership role in 2015 as the managing lawyer for the Estate Planning, Probate & Elder Law Group at Ferrante & Dill, LLC. In 2017 he was listed as owner and of counsel at ERA Law Group, LLC, a step that preceded the opening of his own practice.

In 2018 Ritter opened Ritter Elder Law & Estate Planning. He has guided the firm through the practical demands of advising older clients and their families. His practice addresses estate planning documents, probate administration, guardianship petitions and related Medicaid planning matters. He also represents clients in matters that require interaction with administrative agencies and federal programs, drawing on his earlier experience at CMS.

Ritter is admitted to practice in Maryland and the District of Columbia, and he is authorized to appear in the Federal District Courts for Maryland and for the District of Columbia. He handles both transactional work and court proceedings that arise from estate and elder-law disputes. He practices elder law and estate planning at Ritter Elder Law & Estate Planning.
