About Brian
Brian McDonnell's path to law shows a clear pause between study and practice. He earned a B.A. from the University of San Diego in 1996 and returned to formal legal training a decade later, receiving his J.D. from Western State University College of Law in 2006. That gap shaped how he approaches cases; it also informed his belief that good advocacy depends as much on timing and judgment as on technical skill.
He spent the years after law school building a practice in criminal defense. Today he leads The McDonnell Law Office, where he represents clients in state and federal courts across California. He is admitted to practice in California and in the U.S. District Courts for the Central, Southern, Northern and Eastern Districts of California. He handles matters that range from misdemeanor charges to serious felony allegations that require federal court experience.
Colleagues and clients see him as pragmatic and direct. He favors clear explanations and steady preparation. His files often involve complex procedural questions, and he has developed a routine for sorting evidence, briefing issues and setting realistic expectations for clients.
McDonnell remains active in several professional organizations. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Orange County Bar Association, the North Orange County Bar Association and the Hispanic Lawyers Association. Those memberships keep him engaged with changes in criminal law and trial practice, and they provide regular opportunities for continuing legal education and peer consultation.
The McDonnell Law Office operates from Orange County and concentrates on trial-level defense work. McDonnell balances courtroom time with client meetings and case preparation. He handles arraignments, hearings, plea negotiations and trials. When matters require federal venue or multi-district procedure, he uses his admissions to the various U.S. District Courts in California to represent clients at that level.
Outside the courtroom he contributes to local legal discourse through association events and CLE programs. He does not foreground publicity; his day-to-day work is focused on case management and client advocacy. He prefers to measure success by concrete outcomes, such as case dismissals, negotiated resolutions and clear records for clients.
He maintains an active criminal defense practice at The McDonnell Law Office, representing clients in state and federal courts throughout California.
