About Brian Joel
Brian Joel Aplin earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Mercer University in 2007, then returned to Mercer for law school, receiving his J.D. from the Walter F. George School of Law in 2017. He studied in Macon through both degrees, developing an analytical approach that reflects his science background. Those years shaped his early approach to evidence and courtroom strategy.
He began working in a law firm setting while still connected to Mercer’s legal community. In 2016 he worked as an associate at Buzzell, Graham & Welsh, LLP, gaining exposure to client counseling and the rhythms of litigation practice. After law school, he joined the Georgia Public Defender’s Council as an assistant public defender in 2018. In that role he handled trial-level criminal matters, learning the procedural and tactical necessities of courtroom work under pressure.
Later in 2018 he established THE APLIN FIRM, LLC and serves there as lawyer and principal. Founding a firm changed the day-to-day. He moved from the institutional setting of a public defender office to managing cases, client intake, and the business side of practice. That shift allowed him to combine trial experience with case management responsibilities.
Aplin’s background in criminal defense is the most visible through his public defender work. He has experience preparing cases for trial, conducting hearings, and arguing motions in state court. His science training informs how he evaluates evidence and questions expert testimony. Colleagues describe him as methodical in trial preparation and assertive when presenting a client’s position.
He continues to practice in Georgia courts, handling matters that require litigation experience and an understanding of criminal procedure. His practice blends courtroom work with client counseling and the procedural management that keeps cases moving. He is based at THE APLIN FIRM, LLC, where he oversees the firm’s legal work and client services.
Aplin maintains an active practice in Georgia, representing clients in criminal cases and related litigation in state courts.
