About Brian
Brian Barreira trained as an operations manager before turning to law. He earned a B.S. in Operations Management from Boston College in 1976. He then completed a J.D. at Boston University School of Law in 1981 and stayed on to earn an LL.M. in Taxation from Boston University in 1987. The combination of a business undergraduate degree and an advanced tax degree shaped his early interest in estate and financial matters.
His career moved between private practice and institutional work. In 1995 he worked as an estate settlement specialist at State Street Bank and Trust Company in Boston, handling practical issues that arise when estates move through administration. He later opened the Law Offices of Brian E. Barreira in 1996, maintaining offices in Plymouth and Hingham. He also spent time in other Massachusetts firms, including Barron & Stadfeld in Boston in 1997 and Winokur, Winokur, Serkey & Rosenberg, P.C. in Plymouth in 1998. In the late 1990s he gained admission to the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, adding federal practice capability to his state bar membership.
His practice centers on matters common to older adults and their families. He is a Certified Elder Law Lawyer through the National Elder Law Foundation, a credential he received in 1996. That certification is granted by a private organization whose standards are approved by the American Bar Association; it is not a credential regulated by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Barreira has been involved in probate law and elder-law professional circles for decades. He joined the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys in 1990 and its Massachusetts chapter in 1991. He has held memberships in the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Probate Law Section since 1986, the American Bar Association since 1986, and the Massachusetts State Bar since 1985. He was also a member of the Massachusetts Guardianship Association from 2008 to 2012.
Colleagues and clients have long noted his combination of tax schooling and hands-on estate administration experience. That mix informs his work on probate, guardianship, and estate settlement matters. He maintains a principal office in Plymouth and a satellite office in Hingham available by appointment. He practices in Massachusetts and is admitted to the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts. He currently practices from his Plymouth office and a satellite office in Hingham, handling elder law, probate, guardianship and estate settlement matters.
