About Brian Adam
Brian Adam Clay took an indirect route to the law. He began his academic life studying engineering at Purdue University and later turned to legal studies at Indiana University Maurer School of Law. That combination of technical training and legal education is a throughline in how he approaches facts and evidence.
Early in his legal career Clay moved into public service. In 2010 he served as a Deputy Lawyer General at the Indiana Lawyer General's Office. The role put him inside the machinery of state government and exposed him to litigation and regulatory work at the state level. It was a formative period that gave him experience handling legal issues on behalf of a public office.
A few years later, in 2013, Clay shifted to private practice and became a partner at Black Clay LLC. The move marked a transition from government work to running and building a law practice. At the firm he took on responsibility for client work and the operational demands that come with partnership. Colleagues describe him as steady under pressure and methodical in breaking down technical problems into clear issues for clients and courts.
Clay’s academic background in engineering informs his approach to legal problems. He tends to deconstruct complex records and isolate the factual questions that matter most to a legal claim. That mindset is useful in contested cases that turn on detailed evidence, technical reports or regulatory submissions. He pairs that analytical bent with courtroom experience gained during his time in public office and in private practice.
He has maintained ties to the professional bar. Clay has been a member of the Indiana State Bar Association since 2010 and joined the Indianapolis Bar Association in 2013. Those memberships keep him plugged into continuing legal education and the local legal community.
Outside of casework he has taken on the day-to-day responsibilities of partnership, handling client intake, supervision of junior lawyers and the administrative tasks of running a firm. The work calls for both legal judgment and managerial skill.
As a licensed lawyer practicing in Indiana, Clay combines technical training and state-level government experience in his private practice. He is a partner at Black Clay LLC and practices in Indiana, where his practice focuses on matters arising under Indiana law.
