About Brett Jacob
Brett Jacob Szematowicz built his legal foundation in two distinct places. He earned a B.A. in Justice from American University in 2003 and completed his J.D. at South Texas College of Law in 2007. The classroom years fed an early interest in courtroom work and public service.
He began his career as an Assistant State Lawyer in the Sixth Judicial Circuit in 2007. That role put him in the courtroom regularly and exposed him to the pressures of prosecuting cases on behalf of the state. After several years in public service he moved into private practice, taking associate positions at Molhem & Fraley, P.A. in 2011 and at Marone Law Group in 2012. Each stop added layers of trial experience and client-facing responsibility.
In 2013 he became owner and partner at Greater Tampa Law, P.L. The move marked a transition from employee to firm leader. At Greater Tampa Law he manages a caseload, supervises junior attorneys and handles courtroom appearances. The firm listing identifies him as a principal in the Tampa-based practice.
Szematowicz’s professional affiliations track his courtroom orientation. He holds membership in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida since 2010, which allows him to appear in federal cases in the region. He has been involved with the Herbert G. Goldburg Criminal Law American Inn of Court as a barrister since 2014. He is also linked to the Barney Masterson American Inn of Court, where he has served in different capacities over time, including membership on the executive board between 2009 and 2012 and continuing associate membership since 2014. Those associations indicate sustained involvement in the criminal-law bar and continuing legal education networks.
Colleagues and clients describe him as steady in court and pragmatic in case preparation. He draws on his years as a state lawyer when assessing the strengths and weaknesses of a prosecution’s position. That background informs how he prepares defenses and evaluates plea options.
He remains active in Florida state and federal practice. His work at Greater Tampa Law, P.L. centers on courtroom litigation and matters arising under state and federal criminal statutes, along with related civil litigation that flows from those cases.
His current practice focuses on litigation in Florida state courts and the federal courts of the Middle District of Florida.
