About Brandy L.
Brandy L. Merrifield combines a background in forensic and applied psychology with legal training to handle criminal matters across Florida and Alabama. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Forensic/Applied Psychology from the Florida Institute of Technology, then went on to receive her Juris Doctor from the Thomas Goode Jones School of Law at Faulkner University. That combination of psychology and law informs how she prepares cases and communicates with clients and juries.
Merrifield is admitted to practice in both Alabama and Florida. Early in her legal career she gravitated toward criminal defense. In 2007 she took on a leadership role as managing partner at Flaherty & Merrifield Criminal Defense. That title reflects more than an administrative job. It means she has spent many years overseeing case strategy, courtroom work and the running of an office that handles criminal matters.
Her practice experience is anchored in criminal defense. Colleagues and clients who have worked with her describe a lawyer who emphasizes thorough preparation and clear explanations. She handles matters that require familiarity with trial procedure, evidentiary rules and negotiation. She has maintained active involvement in professional organizations that address criminal law practice and emerging issues in the field.
Merrifield holds current memberships in the Florida State Bar, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Florida Bar Criminal Law Section. Those memberships provide networks for staying current on legal developments and for exchanging approaches to litigation and appellate work.
She practices through firms that use the Flaherty & Merrifield name and also maintains a presence under the Flaherty Defense Firm in Destin. Office locations include Destin and Crestview, where she and team members handle client consultations, pretrial work and courtroom appearances. Her management role involves supervising casework as well as mentoring less experienced attorneys in the firm.
Merrifield’s background in forensic and applied psychology complements her criminal defense practice. It shapes how she prepares witnesses, evaluates evidence and presents themes to juries. She currently focuses on criminal defense representation in Florida and Alabama.
