About Bill

Bill Berkshire began his academic journey in the liberal arts. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Denison University in 1972, majoring in English and undertaking secondary studies in art. That combination of close reading and visual sensibility fed into a later decision to study law. He returned to school later in the decade and received a Juris Doctor from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1980.

The years around law school shaped his approach to legal work. He learned the craft of legal analysis and the mechanics of litigation and counseling. Law school also exposed him to courses and clinical work that emphasized writing and argument. Those skills stayed with him as he moved into practice after graduation.

Across the 1980s and the decades that followed, Berkshire built a practice informed by his earlier training in the humanities. He is known to favor clear written advocacy and careful attention to factual detail. Colleagues have noted his methodical preparation and steady pace in handling complex files. He has balanced time in the office and the courthouse. Those experiences have given him a practical sense of how to frame issues for clients and judges alike.

Berkshire has also spent time mentoring younger lawyers and staff. He has supervised research and drafting projects and has refined processes for organizing large case files. Students and junior attorneys have described him as approachable when questions arise, and firm administrators have relied on his steady oversight during challenging matters.

Outside of direct client work, he has kept up with continuing legal education and changing rules of practice. He values plain language in pleadings and client letters. That preference informs how he prepares witnesses and how he edits complex documents to make them easier for nonlawyers to understand.

Now well into a long career that began after his 1980 law degree, Berkshire remains active in the practice of law. He continues to handle client matters and provide legal counsel, concentrating his efforts on client representation and practical legal problem-solving.
