About Benjamin R.

Benjamin R. Zimmermann entered law school after completing an undergraduate degree at Washington University in St. Louis in 1996. He earned his J.D. from Fordham University in 1999. The combination of a Midwestern undergraduate education and legal training in New York set a practical tone for his career.

He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts and New York, and he is authorized to appear before the U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Those admissions have allowed him to handle matters at both the trial and appellate levels across state and federal forums.

Zimmermann serves as Principal at Sugarman & Sugarman, P.C. In that role he manages litigation matters and works directly with clients. His practice has included representation in contested proceedings, courtroom litigation and federal filings. Colleagues describe his courtroom work as steady and focused; clients rely on him for clear explanations of complex procedural and substantive issues.

Over the years he has maintained memberships in several professional organizations. He is a member of the New York State Bar, the Massachusetts Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He also belongs to the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers and the American Association for Justice. Those affiliations place him in regular contact with peers who handle trial work, appellate questions and broader policy developments affecting litigation.

Zimmermann’s practice reflects the sorts of cases that arise in regional commercial and civil litigation. He handles matters that require work in state courts as well as federal district and circuit courts. That mix means he spends time preparing motions, taking depositions, and presenting arguments in court when the case requires it.

He has been part of the legal community through decades marked by changes in procedure and practice. He has adapted to shifting evidentiary rules and electronic discovery practices while continuing to try cases and pursue appeals when necessary. That combination of courtroom experience and appellate readiness has shaped the way he advises clients.

Today he continues to lead litigation efforts at Sugarman & Sugarman, P.C., representing clients in state and federal courts in Massachusetts and New York. His current practice centers on civil litigation across those jurisdictions.
