About Benjamin R
Benjamin R Novotny builds a career around the courtroom. He is a jury trial lawyer who has spent decades taking cases to juries and arguing them before judges. His background combines scientific training and trial advocacy. That mix shows in how he approaches litigation and prepares for trial.
Novotny studied environmental biology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln before moving into environmental law. He earned a master's in environmental law and policy from Vermont Law School and later completed his law degree at Suffolk University Law School, where he also pursued trial advocacy training. Those academic choices gave him technical grounding and courtroom skills.
His career has followed the thread of jury work. Early on he served as a jury trial lawyer and partner at Lubin & Meyer PC. He later joined Trial Lawyers for Justice as a partner and, in 2021, became a partner at Sweeney Merrigan Law, LLP. In each stop he maintained a courtroom role rather than drifting into purely advisory work. He has taken cases through jury selection, trial, and verdict.
Admissions on his record include practice in Iowa, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Oklahoma, and admission to appear before the U.S. Supreme Court. That range has allowed him to try matters in different venues and to adapt to varied procedural environments. He often handles the logistical and strategic demands that come with multi-jurisdiction litigation.
Novotny’s training in environmental biology and environmental law informs parts of his practice when technical issues arise. He combines that subject matter knowledge with years of trial experience. In the courtroom he focuses on evidence, witness preparation and persuasive advocacy. Colleagues describe his courtroom manner as focused and direct.
Outside of trial work he has maintained partnerships and firm roles that involve case management, client counseling and mentoring younger lawyers. He has moved between firms but kept the jury box at the center of his work. He currently practices at Sweeney Merrigan Law, LLP, trying cases before juries and representing clients in civil litigation matters.
