About Benjamin L.

Benjamin L. Lawrence brings an uncommon academic background to his work at the bar. He studied Shakespeare in London, read architecture and English as an undergraduate, then trained in law. The result is an attorney whose approach blends close textual analysis, an eye for structure, and attention to detail.

Law school followed a humanities-angled academic run. He earned a J.D. from The University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law in 2012. Before that he took an M.A. in Shakespearean Studies at King's College London in 2009. His undergraduate degree from the University of Utah is a B.A. with a double major in English and Architecture, awarded in 2004. Those credentials mark a path that moves from literature and design into legal training.

His bar admissions include the Utah bar and the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. That combination places him in state practice while also allowing him to operate on federal appellate matters. He works in settings where federal statutes, administrative decisions and patent and copyright-adjacent issues sometimes intersect with state law questions.

Colleagues describe him as methodical and precise in written work. He favors concise briefs and careful citation. His earlier study of texts appears in the way he parses statutes and precedent. Cases that turn on statutory language or regulatory interpretation can reward that kind of attention. He is equally attentive to the architecture of legal arguments, arranging points so that a judge can follow the logic without undue friction.

Clients and peers note that his background lends itself to appellate and complex civil matters, where drafting and organization matter as much as courtroom presence. He has experience preparing appellate filings and managing the procedural requirements that come with federal appeals. He also handles matters arising out of Utah courts, ensuring that state practice receives the same level of technical care.

Outside the office, his training in architecture and literature continues to inform his work. He reads opinions the way one might read a play or study a building: for structure, rhythm and intent. That habit shows up in briefing and in oral argument preparation. He practices actively in Utah and before the Federal Circuit, handling federal appellate work and matters in Utah.
