About Ashley
Ashley Michael built a path to law that began in the arts. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre from the University of Michigan in 2004 and later returned to school for law, receiving a J.D. from Indiana University School of Law–Bloomington in 2011. The route from stage to courtroom shaped her early approach to advocacy and public-facing work.
Her first legal role came immediately after law school, when she joined the Louisville Metro Public Defender as a staff lawyer in 2011. That position placed her inside the public defense system at the local level. A year later she opened a practice under her own name, operating as Ashley Michael, Lawyer at Law. She has combined private practice with public service throughout her career.
In 2014 she took on the role of Conflict Counsel at the Department of Public Advocacy. In that capacity she handled cases where the regular public defender office had a conflict and an independent appointment was required. The post added a layer of casework distinct from her private practice and from staff public defense, and it reflects a career that moves between court appointments and client-retained matters.
Michael has been active in several professional organizations. She has held membership in the Kentucky Bar Association since 2011 and joined the Louisville Bar Association and the Women Lawyers Association of Jefferson County in 2012. Since 2015 she has been a member of the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Those affiliations have kept her connected to regional developments in criminal practice and to peers handling similar casework.
Her practice record shows a consistent orientation toward criminal defense and public defense work in Kentucky. Colleagues note her steady presence in the local defense community, and her roles have required familiarity with the appointment system, client counseling and representation across a range of matters. She brings to each file the practical lessons of having worked inside both public defender offices and a small, private practice.
Today she practices under the name Ashley Michael, Lawyer at Law. She maintains memberships in local and state bar groups and represents clients in Kentucky on criminal defense and public defense matters.
