About Ashley E.
Ashley E. Johnson graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B.S. in mathematics and history in 2001. She stayed at Vanderbilt for law school and earned her J.D. in 2004. Those years shaped a classic path from quantitative study to appellate law.
She began her legal career in the federal courts. In 2004 she clerked for Judge J. Michael Luttig on the U.S. Court of Appeals. The following year she served as a law clerk to Justice Clarence Thomas at the Supreme Court of the United States. Those back-to-back clerkships placed her at the center of appellate and constitutional work early on.
After her clerkships she moved into private practice. In 2006 she joined Hunton & Williams LLP as an associate. Two years later she took on an of counsel role at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where she has continued her career. Her résumé shows a steady move from court-focused work to roles that involve briefing and appellate strategy in private practice.
Johnson is admitted to multiple forums. She is a member of the Texas State Bar and the North Carolina State Bar. She is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and several federal courts of appeals, including the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th Circuits. Those admissions reflect a practice that travels through federal appellate dockets as well as state matters in two jurisdictions.
Colleagues and case records describe a lawyer who concentrates on written advocacy and federal appellate procedure. Her early clerkships inform how she frames arguments and prepares briefs. She has experience handling complex legal questions that arise on appeal, and she brings that background to matters that require court-level briefing and oral argument.
She is currently of counsel at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where she handles federal and appellate matters.
