About Andrew

Andrew Oliver trained first as an engineer. He earned a B.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona before turning to law. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Law, receiving his J.D. in 1997.

He began his legal career at Fish & Neave as an associate in 2000. That firm later merged into Ropes & Gray. In 2008 he took on a role as special counsel at Townsend & Townsend & Crew. Five years later he joined Amin, Turocy & Watson LLP as a partner in 2013, a position he continues to hold.

Oliver’s admissions reflect a practice that spans administrative, appellate and trial venues. He is admitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and to the Federal Circuit. He also holds admissions in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas and the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, along with state admissions in California and New York. Those credentials underpin work that moves between patent prosecution, district-court litigation and appeals.

Colleagues and peers encountered Oliver in professional settings as well. He served as president of the San Francisco Bay Area Intellectual Property American Inn of Court from 2016 to 2018. That role placed him in an educational and mentorship position, organizing programs and guiding less-experienced practitioners on practice and ethics in intellectual property law.

His background in systems engineering informs how he approaches technical issues. He is comfortable discussing complex systems and translating technical material into legal arguments. In practice he has handled matters that require both technical comprehension and procedural knowledge of patent practice before the USPTO and in federal courts.

The arc of his career shows steady movement between firms and roles, from associate to special counsel to partner. He has worked at firms with national and regional footprints, and his admissions reflect a willingness to litigate and prosecute across jurisdictions. He remains based at Amin, Turocy & Watson LLP and maintains an active practice addressing patent prosecution, litigation and appeals in federal courts and before the Patent Office.

He currently practices at Amin, Turocy & Watson LLP, handling patent prosecution, district-court litigation and appellate matters.
