He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Virginia, earning a B.A. in English in 1993. He stayed at Virginia for law school and received his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1996. The combination of a liberal arts background and a legal education left him comfortable with both written advocacy and courtroom oral argument.
After law school he was admitted to the Virginia bar in 1996 and began practicing in the state. He joined Tucker Griffin Barnes P.C. and rose through the ranks. In 2005 he became a criminal defense partner at the firm. Since then he has continued to handle a steady docket of criminal matters while managing responsibilities that come with partnership.
Hakes’s work covers the routine and the high-stakes sides of criminal defense. He handles arraignments, pretrial motions, plea negotiations and jury trials. He represents clients on a range of charges under Virginia law. He often appears in circuit court and handles the procedural steps that precede trial as well as the trial itself when cases do not resolve early.
