About Allan
Allan Horwich entered the legal world after finishing undergraduate work at Princeton in 1962 and earning a J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School in 1966. He moved into private practice during a period of significant change in corporate and federal litigation. He has combined courtroom work with teaching and service in the legal profession.
Soon after law school, Horwich became a member of the Illinois bar in 1969. That year also marked the start of a long association with the firm then known as Schiff Hardin LLP, where he served as a partner. Over the decades his practice has reached beyond state lines. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the 6th and 7th Circuits, and several federal district courts, including the Northern and Central Districts of Illinois and the Eastern Districts of Wisconsin and Michigan.
Academia has been part of his career path. In 2014 he took on a role as Professor of Practice at Northwestern University School of Law, bringing practical courtroom and transactional experience into the classroom. He also has maintained affiliations with law schools beyond Northwestern, including an office listed at New York University School of Law, reflecting a continuing engagement with legal education.
Horwich has held roles outside of firm life. He serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of Wall Street Lawyer. He is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and has been an active member of the Illinois State Bar since 1969. Those connections have kept him involved in conversations about evolving practice standards and professional responsibility.
Throughout his career he has argued matters in trial and appellate courts and handled work that required admission to multiple federal jurisdictions. His record shows sustained work in federal forums and occasional appearances at the appellate and Supreme Court levels. Colleagues describe him as someone who moves comfortably between teaching, firm responsibilities and court appearances.
Today he is affiliated with ArentFox Schiff LLP, where he continues to handle matters that arise in federal trial and appellate courts. He balances that practice with ongoing ties to legal education and professional organizations, and maintains active licensure in Illinois.
He currently practices law at ArentFox Schiff LLP, handling matters in federal and appellate courts.
