About Alex D

Alex D Patel learned to think across disciplines early. He studied finance before turning to law. He earned a B.A. in Finance from California State University - Northridge in 1990 and a J.D. from Pepperdine University in 1995, where he studied intellectual property law. Those two degrees frame much of his work: the legal doctrines and the commercial questions they affect.

Since completing his J.D., Patel has practiced in California. He is admitted to the state bar and also authorized to appear before the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. That dual admission reflects a practice that spans both trial courts and appellate work when matters move beyond the initial stages.

Patel serves as a partner at a law firm, where he handles intellectual property matters for a mix of clients. He works on both transactional projects and disputes. On the transactional side he advises on licensing and commercial arrangements. In litigation he participates in contested matters that may begin in state court or federal district court and, when warranted, proceed to appellate review.

His undergraduate training in finance shapes how he approaches the commercial aspects of IP. He frames legal questions in terms of business risk and deal mechanics. That perspective informs negotiations over licensing terms, assessments of portfolio value, and strategies for enforcing or defending rights.

Colleagues and clients often encounter Patel as a steady presence in complex files. He breaks issues into discrete steps, focusing on what a client needs to know next. He does not rely on broad theory alone; he aims to connect legal options to concrete outcomes. That approach can make technical material more accessible to executives, inventors, and in-house counsel.

Over time his work has required fluency in procedural rules as much as in substantive law. Practice before the Ninth Circuit requires attention to appellate standards and briefing. Work in California courts demands familiarity with local procedure and remedies. Patel’s practice sits at that intersection of rules, policy, and business priorities.

As of 2026 he continues to practice in California and before the Ninth Circuit, handling intellectual property matters that touch on licensing, enforcement and dispute resolution.
