About Zachary

Zachary Hutchison graduated from Christopher Newport University with a B.A. in 2010 and earned his J.D. from Regent University in 2013. He entered the legal profession soon after law school and has since built a career that moves between private practice and public service. He is admitted to practice in Virginia.

Hutchison began his career at Government Employees Insurance Company in 2013, working as staff counsel. That early role exposed him to the operational side of a major insurer and gave him experience in handling client-facing legal work. In 2015 he joined Protogyrou & Rigney, PLC as a lawyer, then moved into municipal law as an Assistant City Lawyer for the City of Portsmouth in 2016. Each step offered different perspectives on litigation and public-sector legal practice.

By 2018 Hutchison returned to private litigation as a lawyer at Rutter Mills, LLP. The following year he joined Huffman & Huffman, P.L.L.C. as a litigation lawyer, a position he continues to hold. Over the course of his career he has worked on contested matters in multiple settings, representing institutional clients and municipalities as well as private parties. His background includes roles inside an insurance company, in small firms, and in city government, which together inform his approach to case strategy and client counseling.

Colleagues describe him as straightforward and practical in handling disputes. He favors clear analysis over technical flourish. In court and in client meetings he concentrates on the legal and factual points that matter to resolution. He has experience in trial preparation, motion practice, and negotiation, developed across the variety of offices where he has worked.

Outside of casework, Hutchison’s path shows a pattern of shifting between public and private roles, often moving into positions that demand litigation skills and an understanding of governmental processes. That range allows him to advise clients who face regulatory, municipal, and insurance-related questions alongside traditional civil claims. He currently practices at Huffman & Huffman, P.L.L.C., where his practice concentrates on civil litigation and municipal law.
