About William
William Hammond was the founder and president of KC Elder Law, a firm dedicated to estate planning, probate, and elder law services. Established in 1996, the firm has focused on assisting families in Kansas and Missouri with critical issues such as Medicaid planning, estate planning, and finding appropriate care facilities for their loved ones. Under Hammond’s leadership, KC Elder Law became a trusted resource for families navigating complex legal challenges related to aging and care. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Hammond earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 1981. His legal career began shortly thereafter; he was admitted to the Missouri Bar in 1982 and the Kansas Bar in 1983.
His journey into elder law was deeply personal—when his mother-in-law faced life-changing injuries requiring full-time care, he struggled to find adequate resources for planning her future. This experience ignited his focus on elder law, motivating him to dedicate his practice to helping families in similar situations. In addition to his legal practice, Hammond was actively involved in several professional organizations. He became a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, where he contributed to the advancement of the field. As an author and lecturer, he shared his expertise widely.
Notably, he co-authored "The Kansas and Missouri Nursing Home Guide" and "The Alzheimer's Legal Survival Guide," both of which serve as essential resources for families and professionals alike. Hammond's commitment to the elder law community extended beyond his practice. In 2002, he founded The Million Dollar Solution, a coaching group for elder law and estate planning attorneys. This initiative began as a small Mastermind group but quickly evolved into one of the longest-running coaching programs for legal professionals in the field. Through this platform, Hammond provided invaluable guidance and support to fellow attorneys, helping them enhance their practices and better serve their clients.
Tragically, Hammond passed away suddenly from a heart attack at his home in Olathe, Kansas, on December 23, 2020. His legacy, however, continues through the countless families he helped and the attorneys he inspired. He is survived by his wife, Mary, their five children, and four granddaughters, who carry on his spirit of compassion and dedication to the elder law community. His impact on the field remains significant, as his work continues to influence both legal practices and the lives of families facing the challenges of aging.
